100x120 cm - Oil on canvas
This painting presents a striking contemporary portrait of a young figure shown frontally against a dark, muted background. The subject’s face is softly illuminated, with heavy eyelids, parted lips, and an open mouth that immediately draws the viewer’s attention. Inside the mouth, a dark floral or seed-like form appears, creating a surreal and unsettling focal point.
The figure wears a rich red garment covered with textured floral details, contrasted by a voluminous white ruffled collar that gives the portrait a theatrical, almost aristocratic quality. The combination of historical costume references and raw contemporary expression creates a strong tension between elegance and discomfort.
The surface of the painting appears heavily textured, with visible impasto marks across the face, clothing, and background. These raised strokes give the work a physical intensity, making the skin feel fragile and wounded while the red garment seems almost alive with movement. The dark, smoky atmosphere surrounding the figure adds depth and mystery, allowing the face and costume to emerge dramatically from the shadows.
Overall, the painting feels intimate, provocative, and emotionally charged. It explores themes of vulnerability, transformation, beauty, and unease, turning a traditional portrait format into something deeply psychological and visually memorable.
Sinem Demirci is a Turkish contemporary artist born in Istanbul in 1991. She graduated from the Fine Arts Faculty of Okan University in 2015 with a merit-based scholarship, and she continues to live and work as an artist in Istanbul.
Demirci’s work is centered on the idea of the “multiple self”, exploring the many identities, possibilities, and emotional versions that can exist within a single person. Her portraits often feature distorted or deformed facial elements, using the human figure not simply as a subject, but as a psychological space where memory, transformation, vulnerability, and hidden identity are revealed.
Her figures carry a strong emotional intensity. Through expressive surfaces, theatrical compositions, and unsettling details, Demirci creates portraits that feel both intimate and mysterious. The face becomes a place of tension, where beauty and discomfort coexist, inviting the viewer to reflect on the different selves we become, the selves we conceal, and the selves that might still emerge.
Her exhibition history includes presentations with PG Art Gallery in Istanbul, including The Unseen, The Dream of Shell That Never Existed, and appearances at Contemporary Istanbul and Contemporary Istanbul Bloom between 2023 and 2025.

To preserve the beauty and longevity of your artwork and stone pieces, keep them away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperature changes. Paintings should be displayed in stable environments, while stone items like sculptures, vases, and busts are best placed on secure, level surfaces.
Handle all pieces with care using clean, dry hands, and avoid contact with liquids or harsh chemicals. For maintenance, gently dust surfaces with a soft cloth. Proper care will help maintain the color, texture, and integrity of each piece for years to come.
Each piece is carefully packaged to ensure safe delivery. Paintings are protected with durable layers and secure framing materials, while stone objects are wrapped with reinforced cushioning to prevent damage during transit.
We take extra care in preparing every order, so your piece arrives in perfect condition, ready to display.
Our gallery is a curated space where art and interior design come together in harmony. Each piece is carefully selected to complement modern living, balancing form, texture, and emotion. We believe that artwork should not only fill a wall, but elevate the atmosphere of a space, creating a sense of depth and character, and quiet sophistication.
Proper lighting brings artwork to life, revealing depth, texture, and true color. Natural light can enhance subtle tones, while directional lighting helps highlight key details and create a focal point. Avoid harsh glare or direct sunlight, as it may fade the artwork over time. Thoughtful lighting transforms a piece from simply displayed to truly experienced.
A carefully chosen frame enhances the artwork without overpowering it. The right material, color, and thickness can complement both the piece and the interior style. Whether minimal or bold, framing adds structure and definition, helping the artwork stand out while protecting it for years to come.
Styling is about creating harmony between the artwork and its surroundings. Consider nearby objects, textures, and colors to build a cohesive look. Pairing art with decor elements like vases, books, or lighting can elevate the entire space. When styled thoughtfully, artwork doesn’t just hang on a wall — it becomes part of a curated environment.
The placement of artwork plays a crucial role in how it is perceived within a space. Position your piece at eye level for the best visual impact, and consider the surrounding furniture and proportions of the wall. A well-placed artwork creates balance, draws attention naturally, and becomes an integral part of the room rather than an afterthought.
